Dental Crowns

Dental crowns return structure, strength, and function to a tooth that has decay or is damaged. Crowns are also known as caps because they surround the tooth. Our office uses porcelain pressed (or fused) to metal or zirconium and all-porcelain crowns. Our precise color-matching system allows us to find the right shade of porcelain to blend with your natural tooth color. Porcelain crowns are also extremely durable and long-lasting.

Usually your first appointment will be to mold and design the crown for a perfect fit. The second appointment will be to place the crown and ensure you are happy enough to smile again. Once a crown is placed, you can care for it as you do your natural teeth.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges fill in the gap where you have a missing tooth. It is a fake tooth held in place by the surrounding teeth. They are usually made from porcelain material to blend in with your natural teeth color but can also be made from gold and alloys. Some benefits of having a dental bridge are to restore your smile, restore the ability to chew, and prevent teeth from shifting out of position.

Types of Dental Bridges

  1. Traditional – Fake tooth is being help in place by dental crowns.
  2. Cantilever – Fake tooth is being held in place by a dental crown on only one side.
  3. Maryland bonded – Uses framework of metal or porcelain that is bonded onto the backs of the supporting teeth that holds the fake tooth in the middle.

How is a dental bridge attached?

The attachment procedure usually takes two or three appointments to complete. At the first appointment, Dr.Thornton will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap by removing a portion of the enamel and dentin. Since the bridge must be fabricated very precisely to ensure correct bite and to match the opposing tooth, impressions of the teeth are taken and sent to a lab where the bridge will be constructed.
Fixed bridges are typically cemented to the natural teeth or implants next to the space left by the missing tooth. A pontic (false tooth) replaces the lost tooth. Crowns, which are cemented onto the natural teeth, provide support for the bridge.
